A city pool was the scene of a conflict between a life guard and a breastfeeding Mother. I was surprised to learn that the City of Texas City was ignorant of the law that allows a woman to breastfeed her child anytime and anyplace. The lifeguard at the city swimming pool was so taken aback at the site of a woman breastfeeding her child that he had the pool manager call the police.
The video cam of the Texas City PD officer showed nothing illegal happened and yet the pool management wanted the woman to leave. The young Mother was crying while she gathered her belongings and two kids.
The next day Nurses from all over the area descended on the city pool to protest the city not allowing a Mother to breastfeed her child. The local news crews were there and it made all the Houston News Outlets. Texas City really had egg on it's face. Now the story has gone worldwide.
Had I been the Texas City police officer, I would have defended the woman and informed the lifeguard and pool manager that nothing illegal had taken place. Then the lifeguard accused the breastfeeding Mom of cursing. Upon direct questioning by the police, the lifeguard walked that statement back.
What I found odd was a male teenaged lifeguard complaining about seeing a woman's breast. I never read or saw that anyone else had complained.
When I was assigned Spring Break duty in Galveston, there were some women who preferred to celebrate the college holiday topless. I never gave it a second thought because I knew it wasn't illegal. Topless women aren't breaking any laws in Texas. I knew some cops who made women cover themselves because people complained that they were offended. The offended people were usually women whose husband's were staring at topless women.
It is illegal to expose genitalia in Texas. This law reminds me of a time I saw a man peeing on his crying girlfriend's leg. Upon checking, it turned out the girlfriend has been stung in the surf by a Man of War jelly fish. Being typical coastal residents, they knew how to stop the pain. Urine. Instant relief.
Folks, Breastfeeding is a natural act and has been around ever since women began having babies. Let women feed their babies. If you are offended, look away.
That's the way I see it.
