For over 42 years I've had a job that I enjoyed to the point that I liked going to work. Most folks can't say that. Cops have fun. I can't think of a job where a person really does get to play cops and robbers.
Hunting people is exhilarating because you get to match wits with your prey. The adrenaline rush is addictive. When a cop begins the hunt and evidence that you have uncovered begins to bear fruit, there is no greater feeling. When the arrest is made it's good because you are able to tell the victim that their case is solved.
A rookie once told me that he really liked the job because it (patrol) was fairly easy. You take reports, do your paperwork make a couple of arrests and go home. I told him, "It's all good until you have to earn your money." That means there are times that police are hurt or killed or they have to hurt or kill a criminal. I guess the worst part of the job is being Monday morning quarterbacked over a decision you have made in a split second.
Even the training is fun! Role playing for certain types of crimes and practicing arrest take downs is fun. Police officers develop a camaraderie from day one on the job. It is a close knit family and they look out for each other. "We got your 6" is not just a saying, it's a way of life.
Being on the street interviewing shitheads that snitch on other shitheads is fun! Watching stupid criminals commit crimes is fun! Arresting the same stupid criminal is rewarding.
The fun never stops except when you really have to earn your money.
I'll touch on cops playing practical jokes on other cops on another blog.
