WESTPORT, Wash. - A U.S. Coast Guardsman from Washington was honored with the Coast Guard Medal for Heroism during a ceremony in Westport on Friday.
Petty Officer 1st Class Jacob Hylkema, from Coast Guard Station Grays Harbor, was praised for putting his life in danger to rescue a man in October of 2016.
The Coast Guard said Hylkema jumped into 18 to 20 feet breaking seas off the Long Beach peninsula to save the man.
The Coast Guard Medal for Heroism is the 3rd highest award that a Coast Guardsman can be awarded during peacetime.
The Coast Guard Unit Commendation Award was also presented to the unit for the three rescues they conducted on the same night. Nine people were rescued in three separate search and rescue cases during a 20-hour period.
